Welcome to Hilo!  We were treated to a gorgeous sunrise and rainbows over the island as we approached at 7:00am Hawaii time (6 hours ahead of East Coast). We had a full day of site seeing that took us to the Rainbow Falls and Akaka and Kahuna Falls and the Farmers Market, then to the Mauna Loa Macadamian Farm and Factory and the Big Island Candy Co.  The last 2 were definitely Robbi's favorites!!!!

Rainbow over Hilo

Below are some of the photos from the falls that we visited.  A note of interest:  At the Kahuna and Akaka falls there was a 20 minute loop trail that had 380 stairs along with inclines in between that Robbi negotiated like a trooper, even with bad knees!!!
Akaka Falls never is without water flow.

Hilo is the record holder for getting the most rain in a year -- over 140 inches.  And Kona on the leeward side is the dry side of the island, getting nowhere near that amount.

  1. Wow! So beautiful. Yay Mom for making the climb! Any talk in Hilo or repercussions from the fires on their sister island from wildfire damage? I imagine it’s had some impact. Could you see Maui or Lahaina from the ship?
